✔️ Indication of Novelon Lite

Novelon Lite (Ethinyl Estradiol+Drospirenone) is used for contraception. It may also be used in the treatment of irregular periods.

✔️ Pharmacology

Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone are the two ingredients that make this product active. Drospirenone is a synthetic form of progesterone, and ethinylestradiol is a synthetic form of estrogen. The hormonal components of this medication prevent ovulation by reducing the release of gonadotropin. Changes in the cervical mucus (which makes it harder for sperm to penetrate) and changes to the endometrium are examples of secondary mechanisms that could boost the effectiveness of this pill as a contraceptive (which reduces the likelihood of implantation).

The anti-mineralocorticoid activity of drospirenone prevents sodium retention brought on by estrogen. Drospirenone exhibits a positive lipid profile with an increase in high-density lipoprotein HDL when combined with ethinyloestradiol. Drospirenone has antiandrogenic effects and does not interfere with the rise in sex hormone-binding globulin caused by ethinyloestradiol, which is necessary for binding and inactivating endogenous androgens.

✔️ Dosage & Administration of Novelon Lite

• Tablets must be taken every day at roughly the same time in the order specified on the package to achieve maximum contraceptive effectiveness.
• Starting with the first pink tablet in the top row, you must take tablets every day for 24 straight days.
• The white tablet should be taken from the 25th to the 28th day after finishing the pink tablet.
• Don't stop taking white tablets even if your period has already begun because withdrawal bleeding typically begins 2–3 days after starting the white pills.
• The day after the final white tablet of the previous pack was taken, the next new pack began.

Not using a hormonal contraceptive in the month prior:

• Tablet usage must begin on the first day of a woman's menstrual cycle. The first light pink active tablet from the top row of this tablet should be administered to the woman, who won't need to use any additional forms of contraception in this situation. It is acceptable to begin on days 2 through 5, but for the first cycle, a barrier method is advised in addition to the first seven days of tablet use.

Changing from another transdermal patch, vaginal ring, or combined hormonal medication:

• On the day following the last active tablet of her previous COC, a woman should begin taking the first light pink tablet in the upper row of a combined hormonal pill. The woman should begin taking this tablet preferably the day after having a vaginal ring or transdermal patch removed.

Changing from a progestogen-only-method (minipill, injection, implant) or from a progestogen-releasing intrauterine system (IUS): 

• The woman is free to switch from the mini pill at any time (or from an implant or IUS on the day of its removal, or from an injectable when the next injection is scheduled), but in each of these situations, she should also be advised to use a barrier method (like a diaper) for the first seven days after starting the tablet.

Following first-trimester abortion: 

• The woman may start immediately and in this case, no need to take additional contraceptive methods.

Following delivery or second-trimester abortion:

• Women are advised to start at day 21 to 28 after delivery or second-trimester abortion. When starting later, the woman is advised to additionally use a barrier method (like a condom) for the first 7 days of tablet-taking.

Management of Missed Tablets: 

• White pills that are missing from the blister's final row are placebos and can be ignored. However, if one day you forget to take a light pink tablet, take it as soon as you remember. This might entail taking two pills the following day. Until the following week, you should also use another method of contraception (such as a condom). It's likely that you won't be protected against pregnancy if you miss two consecutive days of taking the pills. As a result, you should stop taking the tablet and switch to some other temporary measures (condom/foam tablet) until your next period. On the first day of the subsequent menstruation, throw away the unfinished tablet pack and begin taking pills from the top row's light pink tablet.

If you have missed a period after taking a tablet: 

• You are very unlikely to be pregnant if you have taken all of your medications on time, haven't puked, or haven't used any other medications. As usual, continue taking the tablet. You might be pregnant if you miss your period twice in a row. Inform your physician right away. Start taking the subsequent pack of these tablets only after your doctor has confirmed that you are not pregnant.

How to Delay a Period: 

• Just after finishing the light pink active tablet of the current pack, women should begin taking another new pack of these tablets to delay their period (that is no need to take the white placebo tablet of the present pack). Up until the last tablet of the second pack's light pink color, the extension can be continued as long as desired. Simply stop taking your medication when you want to start your period. A woman may experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting while using the second pack. After the customary 4-day break between white inactive tablet doses, begin your subsequent pack.

Advice in the event of Vomiting: 

Absorption may not be complete if vomiting occurs in 3–4 hours or less after taking a light pink tablet. The guidance regarding the management of missed tablets is applicable in such a situation. After vomiting, the woman must take the extra active tablet (light pink color) from a backup pack.

✔️ How to use Novelon Lite

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Novelon Lite may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

✔️ How Novelon Lite works

Novelon Lite is a combined oral contraceptive pill. It works by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) and affecting sperm movement in the womb to prevent its union with the egg. It also changes the lining of the womb and renders it unsuitable for pregnancy.

✔️ What happens if I miss a Novelon Lite dose?

Follow the patient instructions provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions. Missing a pill increases your risk of becoming pregnant.

• If you miss 1 active pill, take 2 pills on the day that you remember. Then take 1 pill per day for the rest of the pack.
• If you miss 2 active pills in a row in Week 1 or 2, take 2 pills per day for 2 days in a row. Then take 1 pill per day for the rest of the pack. Use backup birth control for at least 7 days following the missed pills.
• If you miss 2 active pills in a row in Week 3, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack the same day if you are a Day 1 starter. If you are a Sunday starter, keep taking a pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack that day.
• If you miss 3 active pills in a row in Week 1, 2, or 3, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack on the same day if you are a Day 1 starter. If you are a Sunday starter, keep taking a pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack that day.
• If you miss 2 or more pills, you may not have a period during the month. If you miss a period for 2 months in a row, call your doctor because you might be pregnant.
• If you miss a reminder pill, throw it away and keep taking 1 reminder pill per day until the pack is empty.

✔️ Interactions

Either a decrease or an increase in ethinylestradiol concentrations can result from ethinylestradiol and other drugs interacting. It's possible that lower ethinylestradiol serum concentrations will have a negative impact on the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive by increasing the likelihood of breakthrough bleeding and menstrual irregularities. Rifampicin, phenytoin, primidone, rifabutin, dexamethasone, griseofulvin, topiramate, some protease inhibitors, modafinil, ritonavir, and barbiturates are a few examples of substances that may lower serum ethinylestradiol concentrations. Ampicillin, other penicillins, and tetracyclines are among the antibiotics that may lessen the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. In addition to taking this tablet on a regular basis, it is advised to use a nonhormonal backup method of contraception when taking it concurrently with other medications that may cause decreased ethinylestradiol serum concentrations.

✔️ Contraindications

It is not advised to use this tablet:

• Existing or potential pregnancy
• If you have heart disease, blood clotting in the veins may occur.
• If you have liver disease or yellowing of the skin
• If you have diabetes with vascular involvement, high blood pressure, migraines, feel something hard in your breast, or experience excessive bleeding for which there is currently no known cause
• Having experienced or had a history of thromboembolic events in the veins or the arteries (e.g. deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, or of a cerebrovascular accident)
• combined with particular neurological symptoms and a history of migraine
• Pancreatitis, or a history of it, if it is brought on by extremely high triglyceride levels
• acute renal failure or severe renal insufficiency
• liver cancer now or in the past (benign or malignant)
• Untreated vaginal bleeding
• hypersensitivity to any of the medication's ingredients.

✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation

Use during Pregnancy: 

• This is contraindicated during pregnancy. Pregnancy must be excluded before starting this tablet. If pregnancy occurs during the use of this tablet, the preparation must be withdrawn immediately. For women who discontinue oral contraceptives with the intent of becoming pregnant, a non-hormonal method of contraception is recommended for three months before attempting to conceive.

Use during Lactation:

• Lactation may be influenced by combined pills as they may reduce the quantity and change the composition of breast milk, therefore the use of estrogen-containing combined pills should generally not be recommended until the nursing mother has completely weaned her child. Small amounts of contraceptive steroids and/or their metabolites may be excreted with the milk.

✔️ Precautions & Warnings

If you are pregnant or have recently had a baby, do not use it.

If you have an adrenal gland disorder, kidney disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, coronary artery disease, circulation problems (especially with diabetes), undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, severe migraine headaches, if you will have major surgery, if you smoke and are over 35, or if you have ever had a heart attack, stroke, blood clot, or a heart attack, stroke, blood clot, or a heart attack, stroke, blood clot

Taking this medication may increase your chances of developing blood clots, having a stroke, or having a heart attack.

Smoking increases your risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack significantly. If you smoke and are over the age of 35, you should not take this medication.
